Spotting Scope FAQ
What is a spotting scope and how is it different from binoculars?
A spotting scope is a high-magnification monocular (single eyepiece) mounted on a tripod, designed for long-distance observation at 20x–60x or more. Binoculars use both eyes at lower magnification (8x–12x) and are handheld for general use. Spotting scopes are the better choice when you need fine detail at extreme range, such as identifying distant birds or reading features on a landscape.
What magnification do I need for birdwatching?
For birdwatching, a zoom range of 20–60x covers most situations. Start at 20x to locate birds in a wider field of view, then zoom in for identification details. The 80mm objective lens on our spotting scopes gathers enough light to keep images bright even at maximum magnification.
Do I need a tripod to use a spotting scope?
Yes. At magnifications above 20x, any hand movement causes too much shake for comfortable viewing. A stable tripod is essential. Our spotting scopes include a tripod in the box, and they are also compatible with our Binocular Tripod Pro for heavier use in the field.
Can I use a spotting scope for stargazing?
Yes. An 80mm aperture collects enough light to see craters on the moon and bright planets clearly. For serious deep-sky observation a dedicated telescope is better, but for casual stargazing a spotting scope works very well and is more versatile during the day.
Can I take photos through a spotting scope?
Yes, this is called digiscoping. Mount your smartphone to the eyepiece using a smartphone adapter and you can photograph birds, wildlife, or landscapes at impressive zoom distances. Our spotting scopes include a smartphone adapter in the box.
Are Zoomble spotting scopes waterproof?
Yes. All Zoomble spotting scopes are waterproof and nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging in cold or humid conditions. They are built for use in rain, mist, and challenging outdoor environments.
